Repairing a Leaky Roof: Home Improvement Tips from a Baltimore County Roofer

Friday, November 30th, 2012

As a homeowner, perhaps no issue is more troublesome to deal with than a roof leak. Over time, even the best asphalt shingles will wear down. As a result, a roof leak may develop. Not only can a leak cause considerable damage to your home, it can also be very difficult to locate and repair.

Fortunately, the roofing experts at Garner Roofing are here to help!

DIY Roof Repairs vs. Professional Roof Repairs

1. DIY Roof Repairs: While repairing a roof leak may seem like an easy task, trust us…it’s not! Just because you notice water stains on an area of your ceiling does not mean that the roof leak is nearby. Water sometimes travels long distances from a leak source which is why it can be difficult for the do-it-yourselfer track down. Even once you find the leak source, repairing the affected area may be more difficult than you think. Some home owners end up doing more harm than good.

2.  Leave the Hard Work to the Professionals: Professionals are professionals for a reason. They have the experience, the tools, and the know-how to get the job done right!

Garner Roofing: Your Baltimore Roofer and Roof Repair Specialist

Time to Hang Christmas Lights: Safety Tips from a Baltimore County Roofer

Friday, November 30th, 2012

Black Friday has come and gone, marking the unofficial start of the holiday season. And this can only mean one thing for many homeowners; it’s time to hang Christmas lights. But before you do, it is important to make sure you know proper roof safety tips.

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 5,820 people are treated in U.S. emergency departments annually for holiday decorating related falls. The majority of these falls were from ladders, followed closely by roofs.

Roof Safety Tips

1. Test Lights on the Ground: The roof is not the place to troubleshoot your lights to figure out why they are not working.

2. Never Work Alone: For starters, everything is easier with someone assisting. Secondly, if something does go wrong, it is important to have someone there to help.

3. The Ladder Matters: Step ladders are designed as work platforms and can be great for hanging lights from eaves and other similar tasks. However, they are not designed as a means to access your roof. An extension ladder or standard straight ladder, which are both designed for this purpose, are you best bets for accessing your roof.

4. Proper Footwear: Make sure you wear shoes with good traction.

5. Make sure the Roof is Clear and Dry: Never, never, NEVER try to work on a wet roof. It is hard enough to keep your footing on a dry roof, let alone a wet one.  Also, steer clear of debris – such as branches and leaves – as stepping on these while on the roof may cause you to loose traction.

6. Is your Roof Safe? Before ever climbing on your roof, make sure it is in good condition.

Residential Roof Maintenance Tips from your Baltimore County Roofer

Saturday, November 17th, 2012

Roofs are built to last. They are made to withstand high winds, rain, snow, ice, and anything else Mother Nature can throw their way. But as you can imagine, your roof takes a beating, undergoing a lot of wear and tear over the years. Because of this, it is important for YOU to take the time to perform a few preventative maintenance tasks from time to time.

Roof Maintenance Tips

1. Minimize the Foot Traffic on your Roof: Yes, there will be times when you need to climb on your roof. But don’t make it a habit. Your roof already takes a beating; it doesn’t need you up there too.

2. Never use a Power Washer on your Roof: While it may seem like a great idea to power wash your roof, it is not. The force of a power washer can loosen the granules of your asphalt shingles, shortening their lifespan and putting your roof at risk.

3. Never use Bleach on your Roof: Bleach is a corrosive and can damage your roof.

4. Perform Periodic Roof Inspections: From time to time, you should inspect your roof for common roofing issues, especially if your roof is more than 10 years old.

5. Keep your Gutters Clear: If your gutters are clogged, they cannot do their job. This can cause water to backup under your shingles and into your attic.

6. Make Timely Roof Repairs: If you notice a roofing problem, have it fixed as soon as possible. Remember the old adage, “a stick in time saves nine?” Well, the same holds true for your roof. If you delay repairing a small roof problem, it could quickly worsen.

7. Trust your Local Baltimore County Roofer: It is important to leave the roofs to the experts. You can easily cause irreparable damage to a roof if you don’t know what you’re doing.

Common Roof Problems and Roof Repair from your Baltimore County Roofer

Thursday, November 15th, 2012

Over the years, your roof takes a beating. Between falling branches, clogged gutters, high winds, torrential downpours, sleet, snow, ice, and everything else Mother Nature throws your way, your roof sustains a lot of natural wear and tear.

It is okay, though. Your roof is made to handle these issues. But sometimes, your roof needs a little help. And this is where you come in.

In order to keep your roof in tip top shape, it is important to fix any small roof problems before they become big issues. This requires periodic roof inspections (both interior and exterior) on your part, as well as timely action.

Common Roof Problems to Look Out for

1. Missing Shingles: The most common of the common roofing problems, missing shingles are easily fixable. But if ignored, missing shingles can lead to roof leaks and other damage.

2. Valleys: Low lying areas of your roof, known as valleys, allow water to flow in one specific area. Over time, this fast-moving water can cause serious damage.

3. Damaged Head Wall Flashing: A head wall is where your roof meets the flat face of a wall. Because of this, rainwater comes to a near stop before finally flowing off the roof. Head wall flashing is a common culprit of roof leaks.

4. Damaged Wall Step Flashing: Similar to head wall flashing, wall step flashing is where the slope runs alongside a wall. Damaged wall step flashing can not only cause roof leaks, but because of the unique nature of this flashing, leaks can appear far from where they originate, making them hard to identify.

5Chimneys: Unless they are on the peak of the roof, chimneys have both head wall and wall step flashing.

6. And More!

Roof Repair or Replacement? This Question answered by your Baltimore Roofer

Friday, November 2nd, 2012

roof replacementHomeowners in today’s economy are opting for roof repairs over roof replacements. Is this a wise decision? Garner Roofing, your Baltimore County, Maryland roofer, has the answer!

Roof Repair or Replacement?

Depending on the type of problem plaguing your roof, a small repair may do the trick, extending the life of your roof. You may be surprised to learn that more than half of the roofs inspected by Garner Roofing do not need replacement! Still, some do. So how can you tell the difference?

Start with a Routine Inspections: Routinely check the condition of your roof, both inside and outside of the home. You should do this at least once a year. Click here for a more detailed explanation of roof inspections and what you should be looking for.

1. Leaky Roof: A leaky roof is typically an early sign of trouble. If addressed quickly, most leaks can be repaired before they cause too much damage at minimal cost. If ignored, however, minor leaks can turn into major problems requiring extensive and costly repairs.

2. Cracked/ Curled Shingles: Cracked and/or curled shingles are a serious warning sign that your roof needs replacing. Once shingles deteriorate to this condition they quickly begin to loose the water proofing properties that prevent water entry and more leaks begin to occur.

And this is just the beginning.

In the end, the only way to truly know if you need a roof replacement is to have your roof thoroughly inspected by a professional roofer, like Garner Roofing. So if you are interested in scheduling a free roofing consultation / siding consultation, please contact Garner Roofing by calling 410-753-2322 or visit GarnerRoof.com today!
